This seems to be more an experiment at present that something to take seriously (hence play in the title and warnings in the article). It does sound like there are some serious downsides like kernel version compatibility, and also backdoors being inserted in hardware (it would become a very tempting target for people like the NSA if just a few manufacturers made all the tls hardware), so not sure we'd want this.
I was really hoping there'd be some, synthetic, benchmark involved too that would show some kind of performance difference.
