  A few new changes to the site -

  • user refs like @kenny and bare links like https://golangnews.com are now automatically linked in comments and story text

  • A reader count (active last 5 minutes) in the header on the home page

  • The site is now a standalone process, using a letsencrypt cert (autocert usage coming soon), so it no longer sits behind a proxy

  • The site now uses a separate db server, so that I can host the go process as a service on a CoreOS instance (for auto-updates)

  Some more recent changes to the site:

  • You can now edit your stories or comments for a short while after posting, to correct any obvious errors.

  • Some style changes to the site styling, including using Open Sans where available

  • Updated contribution guidelines and added links to it for submit/comment, just to make it clear what is expected.

  • Admins may only edit their own stories/comments - downvotes or flags can be used for spam (previously admins could delete spam).

  • Experimental interface for creating stories/comments with text editable for formatting is now enabled for admins, coming soon for readers.

  We've now hit 1.4k followers on twitter, and over 500 registered users on this site, typically there are 1-5 people on the site at all times now and we hit a peak of > 1k visitors in a few hours the other day due to a mention on the golang nuts mailing list, so things are getting busier. Thanks for all the contributions so far.

  Some minor changes today:

  • Added a link for @Unknwon who very kindly donated the golangnews.com domain for this site.
  • Adjusted Show and Ask stories to go to the story first, then let you click title to visit the link - to make it easier to enter the discussion - suggested here
  • Adjusted website nginx config to fix default site showing for some users
  • Transferred registration of the domain over to golang news - thanks @Unknwon!

  I made the following changes to the golang news site today:

  • Added godoc links for github urls
  • Tidy up medium url suggested title
  • Added Code link to header for github.com or bitbucket.org urls
  • Allow search , added search in footer to allow hashtag searches
  • Added user comments and submitted stories to the user page.
  • Added more link at bottom of indexes, to set page in stories lists where there are more stories
  • Adjusted nav mobile styles to avoid overflow - instead use several lines
  • Added points for story upvote too, to encourage submitting stories early on - may revise this later

  A little meta-discussion on this website. User permissions are as follows just now (they might get tighter later on):

  • 0 points - submit, comment
  • 0 points - upvote
  • 50 points - downvote costs 1 point
  • 100 points - flag costs 1 point

  Upvotes on your comments give karma/points to your user, upvotes on submitted stories do not.

  Flagging will remove 5 points from story or comment, so use it wisely only on very bad stories. Usually upvote or downvote is fine.

  Any suggestions for changes to rules?

  The idea was comment upvotes reward quality comments, whereas story upvotes just reward whoever posts the link first, but perhaps I should reconsider, especially in the early stages to encourage submissions.

  In other news, we just hit 20 users after a few days, which isn't too bad.

  [Edit] - I've changed story upvotes to reward users who submit with points too. May revert this later.
